Top 5 Family Destinations in Thailand
Every family is different. Some want beaches and pool days; others want jungle treks and elephant sanctuaries. Here are the 5 destinations I send families to most often, with notes on which family they suit best.
1. Phuket — The Easy Beginner
Best for: First-time families, kids under 7, beach-focused trips.
Phuket is the most developed Thai island, which is both its strength and weakness. You'll find Western restaurants, pharmacies, English-speaking doctors, and dozens of family-friendly resorts. The downside: it can feel touristy.
Where to stay: Kata Beach or Karon Beach for quiet family vibes. Avoid Patong (too rowdy for young kids).
Don't miss: Phuket Aquarium, Big Buddha at sunset, Coral Island day trip.
2. Koh Samui — The Sweet Spot
Best for: Families with kids 5+ who want beach + a bit of adventure.
Koh Samui hits the sweet spot between Phuket's polish and the wilder islands. The beaches are gorgeous, the food scene is excellent, and there are enough activities to fill a week without driving anywhere.
Where to stay: Chaweng Noi for family-friendly resorts, Bophut for the boutique vibe and the Friday Walking Street.
Don't miss: Na Muang Waterfall (kids can swim!), Samui Aquarium and Tiger Zoo, sunset at Lamai Beach.
3. Krabi (Ao Nang) — The Adventure Pick
Best for: Active families with kids 6+, snorkeling, exploration.
Krabi is where you base yourself to access the most beautiful islands in Thailand — Phi Phi, Hong Islands, Railay Beach. The mainland itself is quieter than Phuket but with excellent infrastructure.
Where to stay: Ao Nang for accessibility, Railay if you want to splurge.
Don't miss: Four Islands tour by longtail boat, Tiger Cave Temple (1,260 steps — older kids only!), Emerald Pool.
4. Chiang Mai — The Cultural Heart
Best for: Families with kids 4+ who want culture, nature, and cooler weather.
Chiang Mai changes families. It's slower, gentler, deeply Thai. The old city is walkable, the night markets are magical, and the nearby mountains offer ethical elephant sanctuaries, hill tribe villages, and zip-lining.
Where to stay: Inside the old city walls for atmosphere, or Mae Rim for resort-style with mountain views.
Don't miss: Elephant Nature Park (the only ethical sanctuary I recommend), Doi Suthep Temple at sunrise, Saturday Walking Street.
5. Hua Hin — The Insider Pick
Best for: Families who want beach + ease, weekenders from Bangkok, less crowds.
Hua Hin is where the Thai royal family vacations, and you can feel why. It's a calm beach town with great seafood, the best night market in Thailand (Cicada), and easy access to vineyards and waterfalls.
Where to stay: Anywhere along Hua Hin Beach.
Don't miss: Cicada Market on weekends, monkey-watching at Khao Takiab, Pala-U Waterfall day trip.
My Honest Recommendation
For most first-time families with kids under 10, I recommend Koh Samui + Chiang Mai in the same trip. Fly into Bangkok, transfer to Samui for 5 nights of beach decompression, then fly to Chiang Mai for 4 nights of culture and elephants. It's the most complete Thailand experience a family can have.
