Welcome to Thailand with Kids: Your First-Time Guide
Thailand has welcomed our family for over a decade, and what I tell every new family is the same: come with an open heart, and Thailand will take care of the rest.
Before You Fly
The single most important thing you can do is arrive rested. A long-haul flight with kids is brutal — book accommodation for the night you land, never plan activities for the first day. Your jet-lagged 4-year-old will thank you.
Pack lighter than you think. Thailand has everything: diapers, formula, sunscreen, kids' clothes. The only things I tell families to bring from home are:
- Prescription medication (with original packaging + a doctor's note)
- A favorite stuffed animal or comfort object
- High-SPF mineral sunscreen if your child has sensitive skin
- An adapter for Type A/B/C outlets
Arriving in Bangkok
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is huge but well-organized. Immigration usually takes 30-60 minutes — bring snacks, a tablet with downloaded shows, and patience.
Pro tip: Pre-arrange a private transfer with a car seat. The arrival taxi line is long and most taxis don't have car seats. Wonder Place arranges this for every family — we meet you at the gate with a name sign, a cold water bottle, and a properly fitted car seat.
The First 48 Hours
Don't pack the schedule. Let the kids swim in the hotel pool, take a sunset walk, eat something familiar (most upscale hotels have Western breakfast options). Thai children are doted on everywhere — expect smiles, gentle touches, and offers of fruit from strangers. This is normal and culturally beautiful.
Cultural Basics for Families
- Children should not touch monks or step on temple thresholds
- Shoes come off when entering temples and most Thai homes
- The head is sacred — don't pat children on the head, even gently
- A small wai (palms together, slight bow) is taught to Thai kids from age 2 and your kids will love practicing it
What Surprises Most Families
The food is gentler than you expect. Pad Thai, mango sticky rice, grilled chicken, fresh fruit — Thai food has a magical ability to please picky eaters. And the warmth of the people toward families is unlike anywhere else I've traveled. Trust me: Thailand is going to be one of the best decisions your family ever makes.
